Bill Clinton Announces $20 Million Haiti Loan Fund
Bill Clinton has announced a plan to help kickstart the rebuild and recovery in Haiti through a series of loans to be doled out to small and medium sized businesses. Half of the seed money will come from Mexico’s Carlos Slim and the remaining portion will be underwritten by Canada’s Frank Guistra.
The $20 million fund is a project of the Clinton Foundation, through the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative, and Fundacion Carlos Slim, a philanthropic organization created by the Mexican telecom magnate who this year surpassed Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates as the world’s richest man.
This is perhaps one of the smartest forms of relief. The small and mid-sized businesses are the lifeblood of Haiti. If they’re given a chance to build up, then the nation as a whole stands a better chance to solidify itself from within.
