CWTL Crew Q&A: How bad is the HIV crisis in Haiti?

Marc Landas (Director)

In recent years, the HIV/AIDS crisis has improved in Haiti but that was an improvement from miserable to not-so-miserable. The country still boasts the highest HIV prevalence outside of Africa. For a country as small as Haiti, that can be crippling. Moreover, with the pullback in HIV funding by donors, there is a good chance that all of the positive strides made combatting the disease will disappear almost over night. Left unchecked, the disease can spread like wildfire, especially when considering the tenuous situation in IDP camps and the violence being inflicted on women and girls. All the ingredients for an HIV disaster in Haiti are there.
