The Fight For Souls In Haiti

leave a comment »

In a scene reminiscent of times past, the different faith denominations in Haiti are fighting for congregants. Catholics, Protestants, and Vodouistes are mounting soapboxes and attempting to lure new followers. Tensions are rising as each group is blaming each other for causing the earthquake. Couple that with the fact that aid from missionaries is being doled out in most cases to membership of that particular denomination, and we see the potential for an explosive situation in the streets of Port Au Prince. Funny how help comes with a price.

There is still no decision yet on the fate of 10 US missionaries accused of kidnapping a busload of children in Haiti in the attempt to take them out of the country illegaly. Judge Bernard Saint-Vil is still deliberating over the fate of detained ring leader Laura Silsby and her 9 other freed allies. Let’s keep an eye on this.

Knock It Off Already

Leave it to the NYC Department to leverage their efforts on cracking down on counterfeit designer merchandise into a PR move. It appears that 7 truckloads of counterfeit merchandise valued at over $10 Million will be sent to Haiti as part of relief efforts. A noble gesture indeed, but it seems a bit odd picturing earthquake survivors tooling around Port Au Prince in knock off Ed Hardy and Diesel jeans. Even better, the market place in Chan Masse will be teeming with old ladies stuffing fruits and vegetables in their fake Louis Vuitton and Gucci bags. This is really an odd story.
